The Old Mill House is a lovingly restored Grade II Georgian house located in a charming hamlet just a short walk from the historic market town of Wells. Originally built in the 1700s as the miller’s cottage, it is has been gradually extended over three centuries and today presents an architectural mix of traditional and contemporary styles. The present owners Maria and Mark Matthews, who live here with their two children, bought the house in 2009 and set about restoring it, painstakingly recovering period features that had been ripped out in the 1970’s. The 2 ½ acre garden is a work in progress with a brand new orchard just getting underway, a nascent parterre and lots more exciting planting to come.
In addition to renovating the main house, Mark and Maria have converted the former stable block into a self-contained contemporary luxury holiday cottage. Furnished with an eclectic mix of modern and period furniture, flea market finds and local crafts, and decorated in a calming modern rustic style, The Stables offers a stylish and comfortable base from which to explore this gorgeous corner of Somerset.
We spent two lovely nights at The Stables. I couldn't recommend it more. The decor is fabulous.
Jess.
Everything we needed was provided for and Maria was a most welcoming and attentive host.
